According to the police, the killings are carried out by Los Paisas, the new name of the narcotrafficking organization linked to Carlos Mario Aguilar, alias Rogelio (who has been close to drug lord and paramilitary leader don Berna) and Daniel Rendón, alias Don Mario; he is the brother of the paramilitary leader El Aleman, who is behind bars in the high-security prison of Itagui, by Medellín. Interviewed by the magazine, Medellín’s secretary for public security Jesus Ramírez admitted that 10 per cent of the demobilized paramilitary living in Medellín (that is about 400 people) are now members of emergent narcotrafficking gangs. Los Paisas are allies of the Aguila Negras (Black Eagels), which, like the paramilitary before, are the private armies of the drug kingpins, sow terror, and threaten human rights activists and union leaders. Moreover, according to the police, in Medellín 126 gangs with 3,400 members are still operating.

Last october a war broke out for the control of narcotrafficking in Medellín between  Don Berna’s heirs and the Norte del Valle cartel. This is one of the reason for the increase in violence which today is perpetuated by the penetration into the city of Don Mario’s people.
